About this Work
This little piece is titled “That Was Fun, What’s Next?”
It’s a relaxing of my often-so-serious-and-inwardly-oriented self.
And it’s an acknowledgement that for me, a big part of my path and practice is to lighten up, allow for more play, more mess.
Following the death of my older brother when I was nine, I made a kinda-conscious choice to swear off friends, and instead go inward. Where it’s safe! And I won’t get attached to anyone, and then lose them. And more than that, I can find steadiness in the deeps of my insides. And I did that, for almost a decade.
But the bummer sacrifice I made was a giving up of play… like, how wolf pups wrestle and frolic with each other. Or cheetah cubs. Or humans!
This painting is an exploration into a lighter feel, still in the deeps of me, but a shaking loose of my tendency toward that heavy seriousness. How light and colorful can be deep and true too, not just the darker quiets.
I’m lightening up, bit by little bit, here in my mid-life years. On the daily! In my life as a whole, and also in my work.
And that’s really what this painting is mostly about:
