Although these photos and log entries have carried quite a cheery tone, things haven’t always been super easy these first few weeks. Koen, whom we initially thought was 5 or so days late, turned out to be about 2 or 3 weeks early, judging by the amount of vernix on his skin when born (the white slippery stuff), as well as the absence of wrinkles on the pads of his feet and the palms of his hands. As a result (as well as throwing in a number of other complications), the little tyke hasn’t had the easiest time with nursing, as he has so much to learn, and a wee body that’s trying to play catch-up. However, things are looking on the up-and-up. This photo captures one of those post-nursing moments, when peace and abundance descend upon the lands.

Dawn. Just after breakfast. The night was rough and choppy, with Koen waking every 3 hours or so to nurse. He continues to have a bit of difficulty getting the hang of it, so a 25 minute nursing would stretch into an hour and a half. Amber truly is amazing, her patient, loving perseverance helping Koen adapt to hunger pains, crying spells, and an altogether very strange, new world.

Koen, napping in his favorite blankie. It was upon inspecting this photo, that I came to the conclusion that Koen may, indeed, be a distant relative of the Egyptian kings and queens of the ancient past. Yes, I know, every other New Ager claims that “I was Cleopatra in my former life”, but what I’m talking about is the real deal, people. The photo below shows, with irrefutable force, the genetic connection between our little boy, and the sun-worshipping, hieroglyphics-writing folks of the past. Case closed.
