In the deeps of night, drenched in firelight and harmonica, he pauses. His mind slows, quiets.

A tribe of shamans rises from the flames of yesterday, a direct link to the first fires and the earliest courageous explorations into wild interiors.

In this silent pause, light and dark frolic. It is rapture, ecstasy, divinity-just-so. A simple and profound gratitude saturates the thick air, permeates flesh and soul, and the heart blooms wildly.

I walked out my door, down the tree-shrouded lane, past the thorned rosebush, glance up, and – there he was, watching me, attentively, silently, taking me in. The crow cocked his head, and I could see everything with crystal clarity, not through the eyes in my head, but through the eyes of Spirit, the witness of everything that ever is, was, and will be.

“Singing in Spring”

Blossoms are thick in my neighborhood, their aroma rich and sweet, and the red-winged blackbirds are nesting in the marshy stretch a few hundred yards from my urban studio. While these feisty birds look over their clutches, my own kids are growing, and their laughter brings me such joy. Spring is here, and my world is singing with it’s call.

Upon completing this painting, it was once again Walt Whitman who whispered a title in my ear…

Today, I take a stand. In this ever-fluxing field of endless and unique expression (the crying and happy children and their cooing mothers, the soldiers with their gaze on the horizon, the cat chasing the meadow vole, the fox frolicking with the raven, the crow lifting to the skies), the fundamental unity and Source shimmers.

I am Thou. Two, and not-two. I swoon, feeling you here, everywhere, and take a draught of cool air into my lungs, so I might stand tall with the divine pride that you have instilled in me. We raise the flags, we sound the call, we begin the journey afresh in this moment, in every moment. I vow to love in the only way I can love, when surrendered to you: fully and fiercely, as lovers do.

The fox and the raven have been pitted against one another for centuries (in fables from Europe, the Arctic, and beyond, if not in nature). And no wonder – they both exemplify an intelligence that is both curious/playful and deliciously clever. I’ve been seeing a lot of foxes and ravens lately, and felt compelled to bring them together, on a breezy hill, where light and dark mingle. A moment where none want (there is plenty of cheese), and we can see beyond the masks and roles, to our common source and nature – if only for a moment, before we reassume our masks, and play out our mythic roles…

Much has been said of “the blank canvas” – some artists perceive it as the enemy, others as an exciting gateway to the creative process. But it’s not just artists who face the blank canvas – it’s all of us.

Every day, we wake up to another round of 24 hours on which nothing is written/painted, and so much is possible. As our day unfolds, the choices we make begin to paint a picture. And at the end of the day, we can step back and view the picture we created. We can judge our creation, we can dump it in the trash and vow to create something more beautiful, more meaningful, tomorrow. We can accept our work. We might even be inspired by what we’ve created.

When I’m in my studio, with a primed wood panel hanging from the wall before me, something happens. Whether it’s anxiety, fear, boredom, anger, or a surge of excitement running through me, there is no denying the fact that I AM ALIVE.

The blank canvas is not only symbolic of a day; it’s a metaphor for moment-to-moment reality. Every moment, we stand at the edge of a new creative act, another brushstroke on the canvas of our lives. And while we’re the ones who are responsible for the next choice we make, there is something quite mysterious at work. I’m not willing my heart to beat – it just does. I’m not willing the next brushstroke into being – it just arises.

The divine emerges, pushes, yearns to be released onto the blank canvas before us. It is bigger than any one of us, and yet, we are intrinsically connected to it.

It takes courage to allow this energy, this eros, to move through us.

Will we find this courage today?

Will we find this courage now, in this moment?
