Vast openness before me, limitless freedom within. A luminosity shimmers from every object, every gap, every direction. When my vision clarifies, all is seen as radiant, glorious. Whitman’s “Song of the Open Road” speaks of this with such eloquence:

I am larger, better than I thought;
I did not know I held so much goodness.
All seems beautiful to me.

There are moments when I feel so large, so encompassing, so filled with an unshakeable sense of goodness. I’m finding that Whitman repeatedly speaks to this. His poem, “Song of the Open Road” (from which I pulled my title for this painting), begins as such:

Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.

This piece was created in the days following the January 12, 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. In reading the news updates, seeing the photos, viewing the video footage, listening to the personal accounts, my heart was continually broken. I felt compelled to educate myself on the history of Haiti – shocking, cruel, unimaginable – which cracked my heart open even more so.

And yet, I couldn’t shake the hopeful vision of a ‘deliverance’ from all of this. A chance to start over. To re-shape the external and internal forces that have haunted Haitians for centuries.

A few years ago, when my grandmother was in the hospital, I painted ‘Liberation‘. While the circumstances and scope of each event are so obviously different, both have awakened my heart to a greater depth of loving, vulnerability, and resilience.

The bulk of this piece was created with my friend Jason in the studio; he had just interviewed me, and was now filming me at work. This painting became a gift for Jason, whose decision to move to L.A. and follow his heart’s passion in the film world is, for me, an incredibly inspiring story. The ‘enso’ serves in part as a symbol of the gateway that Jason is walking through, a journey into the unknown, into the center of the universe, into the center point of his very own heart.

“I Drop Into the Mystery”

The phrase used in this painting was offered by someone from the community, which acted as the seed for this painting. Here’s the submission, in its entirety:

Their son is 2½, and I swear he is a little buddha. Every time I see him I am fascinated, and I drop into the mystery of existence. His pure presence and wondrous fascination are awe inspiring. This family is a model for me, in what is possible in relationship and bringing life into the world.
